Treating Autism At the Root: A Functional Medicine Approach | Health Commune
In this segment of our latest HealthCommune Podcast, Dr. Smita Karpate sits down with Dr. Ashwani Garg, co-founder of Functional Medicine Clinic, to discuss the importance of root cause analysis in autistic children and how identifying underlying biological factors can significantly improve outcomes.
Dr. Garg applies a functional medicine approach to diagnosing and treating autism. Instead of managing autism symptomatically, he focuses on identifying and addressing its root causes. He explains that the testing process usually takes 10 days to 2 weeks. Through comprehensive testing, he can detect issues such as neurotoxic exposure (mercury, lead, arsenic), autoimmune dysfunction, severe vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and nutritional and gut imbalance—all of which can contribute to autism in children.
He also highlights the affordability of these tests, pointing out that previous tests were only available abroad at a cost of ₹60,000-₹80,000. But with advancements in Indian labs, they are now accessible for ₹10,000-₹15,000 every three months, making it easier for families to take an evidence-based approach.
Healing requires a structured plan, and Dr. Garg’s approach begins with baseline treatments, including dietary and lifestyle modifications, targeted supplementation, and gradual detoxification. While the journey is challenging, he assures that 80% of children who begin treatment early (ages 3-9) and follow it consistently for 9-18 months show significant improvements in communication, behaviour, and cognitive skills.
